Cambodian Magic Mushrooms Appearance

Even though you probably will never see them fresh, since you can easily buy Cambodian magic mushrooms online in Canada dried, here’s what they look like:

• Size: average, typically ranges from 4 to 6 inches (approx. 10 to 15 centimeters);
• Cap: generally between 1 to 2.5 inches in diameter (approx. 2.5 to 6.3 centimeters) when fully mature. Bell-shaped or conical when young, becoming more convex and eventually broadly convex to flat in maturity. The colour can range from a rich golden brown to a lighter caramel or tan, especially when drying. The surface might have a somewhat glossy appearance when fresh;
• Stem: whitish, usually cylindrical and elongated, sometimes thickening slightly towards the base;
• Gills: Positioned beneath the cap, the gills are closely spaced and are initially a pale color, darkening to a deep purple or nearly black as the mushroom matures, caps open out wide and releases its spores.

Young Cambodian mushrooms often have a partial veil, which is a thin piece of tissue connecting the stem to the cap’s edge. As the mushroom matures and the cap expands, this veil breaks, often leaving remnants on the cap and a ring or “annulus” on the stem. As other P. cubensis variations, Cambodians bruise, meaning that they produce bluish colour when touched due to psilocins air exposure. It doesn’t affect their potency at all, just showing that they contain psychoactive substances.

Cambodian Magic Mushrooms Origins

Unlike vague and inaccurate stories of others strains, Cambodian’s origins are known, thanks to the John Allen, aka Mushroom John. He collected the spores and cultivated them. Here’s what happened:

• Cambodian is named based on its reported place of discovery – in the Siem Reap, region of Cambodia;
• First samples were taken in the early 90s from mushrooms growing near Angkor Wat, one of the largest religious monuments in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site;
• John discovered and documented many P.cubensis strains. Cambodian gained attention due to its fast colonization and ease of growth.

Like other Psilocybe cubensis varieties, the Cambodian strain naturally grows in subtropical environments, often found in dung or manure-rich grassy fields. After its discovery and introduction to the Western cultivation communities, Cambodians saw their spores being distributed and shared, leading to its spread and cultivation worldwide.
